Fishing with Daddy

After our crazy, busy weekend of fixing up the boat, church, Jason's meeting for the summer missions trip, choir practice and baseball practice, the boys (Dad included) enjoyed the beautiful weather and some fishing. They had some success: Kyle - 3 walleye, Dad - 3 walleye, and Kory - possibly 1 (he wasn't into the fishing part too much, his mind was on other matters...not peeing his pants!). You know, no matter how many times we tell the boys that they must go to the bathroom before going fishing or any other activity, they still choose not to and therefore, you are left with one of them undoubtedly having to go at the most inopportune time. In this instance, it would be Kory. Of course, he didn't have to go while still on shore...nope, it had to be in the middle of the lake. And, because he is sooooo stubborn, he refused to go off the side of the boat. This made for a miserable little boy and a very unhappy dad! (He did finally decide it was an okay thing to do after seeing his big brother do it).

Honest, it was a nice day! 60 degrees in fact. However, on the water, it feels much cooler and, they fished between 5 p.m. & 8 p.m.

While the boys were away, mom went shopping! I too had success: 1 pair of tennis shoes for Kory; 1 pair of jeans for Kyle; and, 2 sweatshirts for me. After shopping I enjoyed having the house to myself. I cleaned a little and did my HipHop Abs workout (extremely fun). I'll be out at the clubs in no time, busting out my hip hop moves....ha, ha, ha....yeah, right!

The weather has been beautiful the last few days. And it looks like it's here to stay....yahoo! The kids are enjoying being able to play outside and not having to be bundled up to do so.

This week is pretty slow, but it is going to get crazy again come weekend. We have a birthday party to attend on Saturday. On Sunday, Jason and I are teaching 4 & 5 yr. old Children's Church and after the services, Jason and I have choir practice for the spring musical on May 20th.

Next week we will be preparing for a visit from my sister and her family! We haven't seen them since the beginning of December. We are so excited! I'll have lots to write about next post!

HAPPY EASTER

We had a blessed Easter celebrating Jesus' death, burial and resurrection with Grandma, Grandpa and the Koehlers. Grandma and Grandpa arrived at our house on Thursday evening. We spent Friday shopping and went to the Good Friday service at church that evening. Since Grandma and Grandpa had to leave Saturday evening, we had our "traditional Easter" ham dinner that afternoon. Our friends Josh and Emily came over to celebrate with us. It was a very relaxing time and delicious meal.

After Grandma and Grandpa left, we all found a comfy spot to watch Spiderman 2 (one of Kory's favorite movies). Emily and I also made a quick run Starbuck's for a couple of Frap's and a White Chocolate Mocha...yum!

Our Sunday Best

Sunday was freezing, but I had to dress for spring. Nothing like wearing white, a pair of kitten-heeled thongs, a winter jacket and mittens :) What us women won't do for fashion! Our church had a breakfast (not sunrise, thankfully), which we enjoyed, together with the Easter service. After church we came back home and literally did nothing but lie on the couches and sleep off and on all afternoon. It felt great.

The weather has been pretty cold and gloomy for a week. Today it is snowing. They are predicting 3 inches by this evening and another 3 inches by morning. At this rate I think it will be winter until June.

Last week Kyle had try-outs for baseball. And....he made it into Little League. He is officially a Lion, with a uniform and everything. He was pumped! His first practice is this Friday with games to follow in the next couple of weeks. Let's hope the weather warms up a bit :)

Tonight is the boys last night of One Way for the year. They are having an awards night at which both the boys will be receiving a medal for memorizing all the required scripture verses...Yeah! This is old hat for Kyle, though he is still excited and proud of himself. Kory on the hand can barely contain his excitement. He is so excited to receive his medal. Hopefully, his (Kyle too) desire for memorizing God's Word will continue, but not be dependant on receiving a medal in return.

Anyway, we keep plugging along here in Wausau...anxiously awaiting spring, but I'm pretty sure we'll jump right into summer. I can't believe the boys only have 8 weeks left of school. I'm sure that time will fly and it will be summer before we know it.

Spring Break begins with a whirlwind trip to Minneapolis...

At 8:30, Friday morning we were up and at 'em and headed out the door to Minneapolis to visit Jason's grandma, aunt and uncle and his brother, Jesse, who flew in from Virginia. Earlier in the week grandma had fallen in her apartment and was placed in the hospital. She wasn't injured from her fall, but after doing some tests the doctors discovered she had a touch of pneumonia, an UTI and neuropathy (dizzy spells). She has now been placed temporarily in assisted living for physical therapy, etc. This will allow Jason's aunt and grandma to make some decisions as to whether she will return to her apartment or find a new apartment in a permanent assisted living complex.

Anyway, we arrived in Minneapolis at 11:30 a.m. We picked Jesse up at his friends', Jeremy and Jen, house; grabbed some lunch; found a Fantastic Sams for a much needed haircut for Kyle; and, then went and visited with grandma. We spent a couple hours with her, listening to stories of her childhood through the birth of Jason's mom. She is such a wonderful woman and still has quite a bit of wit and spunk at 90. It truly was a wonderful time. The boys did amazingly well being cooped up in a car for 3 hours, and a "nursing home" for another 2. Good thing the place had a cage of birds that kept them entertained off and on for an hour. Uncle Jesse was also very kind to take them to a park for awhile. The other residents also enjoyed the boys. Of course, while Kory is along, a trip can never go without incident. Upon entering the assisted living complex, in true Kory form, he announced...."Hey, this place is filled with just old people!"

It was also good to spend time with Jesse. We haven't seen him since last summer and it's always fun to catch up on things. It was just too bad that his wife, Sarah and their son, Davin, weren't able to make the trip too. We'll get to see them this summer!

We had dinner with Ron and Bonnie (Jason's uncle and aunt). We are grateful for their hospitality after the crazy week they have had with grandma. We headed home to Wausau at around 7:30 p.m. We were all tuckered out, but God is good and brought us home safe and sound. The boys slept, Jason drove the first half and I drove the second half. My bed was a wonderful thing to crawl into at 10:45!

I think we all crawled out of our beds this morning between 8 & 9 (myself being the one who stayed in bed until 9 - that doesn't happen very often!). Jason had a meeting this morning at 10 and then has to give a tour of the power plant from noon to 3 this afternoon.

Our friends, Josh and Emily, are coming over later this afternoon. I believe dinner and a few competitions on the DDR (Dance, Dance Revolution) are in order for this evening. I just purchased the DDR this week. I know, I am behind the times on this one, but it's better late than never, right?! I don't believe I will ever pass the beginner's level, but I figure it's fine, I get a good workout! Kyle does pretty well. Kory, however, has a little keeping up and gets a little frustrated. I think he'll get it in no time though. Jason has yet to even try it.

Anyway, we are looking forward to this week off. We don't have any plans other than to just relax and do whatever we want. The good news is that the weather is suppose to be amazing...in the 60's for sure, maybe even reach the 70's!

Oh, by the way, Jason and I still have not conquered stage 12 in ZUMA.

A week in the life of Kyle

FRIDAY - Mom is off to the store for paint (yellow) and decals (a cobra head) for the pinewood derby car. After 45 minutes and two stores later, I can claim victory! Thank goodness, now I do not have to try and paint a cobra head free-hand...yippee!

SATURDAY/SUNDAY - Jason and Kyle spent these days sanding and painting his pinewood derby car. The cycle begins...sand, paint, let it dry, sand, paint, let it dry. Finally, the paint meets dad's approval and the car is now ready for it's finishing touches.

Monday...6:00 p.m. ... The count down to the race begins. We arrive at the school check in Kyle's car and wait....and wait...and wait. So after an hour of waiting, we begin the evening with the beloved "Pinewood Derby Song" (sung to the tune of Camp Down Races), lead by the 65-year old Scout leader and the official pinewood derby guy. This was followed by 15 minutes of rules of the pinewood derby race...ahh...can we start already?!

After four rounds of races, the champs were determined and they get to go onto the finals in April. Kyle did not come out as one of those champs...he would always win the first round, but then lost by a hair on the second race. There's always next year.

TUESDAY, 8 A.M. - Kyle and I are off to the dentist to get his braces. This is the first step in the process of straightening his teeth. And so this cycle begins, once a month trips to the dentist for the next 16 months. Somewhere along the way in these 16 months, Kyle will receive head gear to push his upper front teeth back to eliminate his overbite. We are excited to see what he will look like in 16 months. I can only imagine, he already looks so much older :(

KYLE AND HIS NEW "BLING"

9:30 a.m. - Arrived at school, only to be late for a district writing test. Good thing he had a couple of days to complete it! All the kids thinking he's pretty cool.

12:00 p.m. - LUNCH! Apparently eating a hamburger for the first time with braces didn't go so well. He did his best and ate what he could.

3:30 p.m. - Home from school and not feeling the greatest. His teeth are hurting and his cheeks keep getting stuck on the wires on his back teeth.

6:00 p.m. - Dinner time. I made chicken for myself, Jason and Kory. Because of Kyle's chicken allergy, I made him turkey. Unfortunately, his turkey wasn't done at the same time as our chicken so he had to wait. However, I had bought organic (no antibodies or hormone injected) chicken so I thought we would give it a try...Jason gave Kyle a bite the size of a dime...10 minutes later his throat hurt and felt swollen and he was in the bathroom throwing up. As if getting braces wasn't enough for one day!

7:00 p.m. - I was making Kyle a smoothie, which he drank camped out on the couch with dad watching American Idol.

WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY - Finshed up the week of school, had a few tests and is learning how eat, talk, etc. with his braces and coping with the canker sores.

FRIDAY - SPRING BREAK BEGINS!

Tea Time at the Spa

Thursday I enjoyed an evening out with the girls at the spa. My friend, Alison, is pregnant and due in 4 weeks so we decided she needed some pampering and an evening to relax. So we treated her to a maternity massage. Each of us also enjoyed a couple of the spa's mini services. I am all about the scalp massage, especially after driving there in a winter storm! In between our pampering we enjoyed tea and the most amazing mini-sandwiches and squash soup. It was a wonderful evening spent with the girls. And, Alison loved the massage. Maybe we'll have to treat her to another massage after the little one gets here :)

Kory's flu bug mutated into something else and attached itself to me this week. I have been battling the worst cold I think I may have ever had. I pretty much just existed last week, shuffling through my crazy, busy days in delirium. Not a good spot to be in when you have to do a word study on "fruit" on all the New Testament passages. Because I was not able to stop and rest until yesterday (Sunday), my cold has taken on it's own identity within my body. Due to body-wrenching coughing spells, my stomach feels like I have done the equivilant of 2000 sit-ups (I guess the ab workout can wait a week). My nose went from running endlessly one minute to being completely plugged the next. How frustrating! I did get a good night's rest last night and felt much better this morning. As the day goes on, I can feel the energy depleting from my body so I think a nap is in order this afternoon :)

Anyway, Saturday my friend Jessica and I hosted a baby shower (remember the diaper cakes?)for Alison. I think there were around 65 ladies that attended. Alison was very grateful and enjoyed the day. She also made a haul in gifts. The theme was "The A,B,C's of Godly Parenting". The room was decorated with blocks and diaper cakes. The devotion was given by a number of ladies who were given specific letters of the alphabet and asked to come up with a word beginning with that letter and some wisdom or bible verse to go along with it. Any guesses what letters I received?! W & X! It took a little creativity on the letter "X", but upon searching Greek, a word was found.

Because so much work went into the diaper cakes and they no longer have to be a surprise, I must show you a few pictures of them.

When I picked Kory up today he was in the office with an injury...

sliding hills and our family don't get along, I guess. Apparently, while body sliding down a hill today, his face met the ice. Hmmmm...shall I say "like father, like son"?

On my "to do" list for today, one item is to update my March calendar. By the looks of it, March is already full. I think we only have one weekend that is not scheduled with something. Thank goodness March ends with spring break, I think we'll need it.

Winter Wonderland

We have endured the freeze out and now 10 inches of snow has fallen upon us. It began snowing on Friday evening and it has been snowing off and on ever since. Prior to this weekend, Jason used the snow blower maybe twice. This weekend, it was used twice a day....yikes! They are still predicting another 5"-8" on Wednesday. Looks like we are right on schedule for ringing in March in Wisconsin. Just when you think spring is right around the corner. Nope, not yet....let's have another foot of snow.

Since it was snowing and blowing outside, I decided to make the best use of my time...cleaning! I spent one whole day last week "gutting" out Kyle's room. One day and one garbage bag later, the room was spic and span and looking mighty fine.

This spurred the cleaning beast within me and the playroom was my next victim. Friday evening we went and purchased some storage units and chairs...the beast was unleashed and the whirlwind began. I might possibly have looked like the tasmanian devil from Looney Tunes. After three hours, a toy box, table and various toys fell victim to my wrath and found their new homes in 4 garbage bags.

My inner beast was not quite satisfied and Saturday it made it's way into the pit of Kory's room. I went in and didn't escape for 4 hours. After 4 hours and two garbage bags, his room was cleaned to my satisfaction!

Jason and I have fallen victim to what might possibly be the most addicitive computer game ever....ZUMA! Thanks to our friends, Josh and Emily, for the introduction to the biggest time-waster in the world :) Let's just say 2 hours can go by in a minute. There are twelve stages with seven levels in each stage. Stages 1-8 weren't too hard to conquer and the game didn't really become that addictive until stage 9 was thrust upon us. There is something about the human mind that just can't let a computer beat you. Therefore, one will spend hours looking at the same sequence of boards, trying to conquer them. We are happy to report that we have both conquered stage 9 and breezed through stages 10 & 11 only to slapped with the same sequence of boards in stage 12 as in stage 9.....aaah! Will the madness ever end? We'll keep you posted on our accomplishments :) I am just glad that I was able to accomplish some good (cleaning and organizing) with my bad (ZUMA) this last week. I am also happy to report that ZUMA has not been played yet this week. However, the determination to beat the game is burning within me, so it will be played before the week ends.

We have nothing extra on the schedule this week so we plan to take advantage of the time and just chill out at home.

The Heat Wave!

Well, a heat wave has come upon us Wisconsinites. Yesterday was a balmy 30 degrees and today we are suppose to have a high of 32. It is sad when you think 30 degrees is warm :) It's almost just sweatshirt weather right?! We are praying that the 30's turn into 40's and 50's and this dreaded winter will soon be over.

The boys and I enjoyed a day at home yesterday as they did not have school. It was nice to have that extra day after the weekend to just chill out at home. However, today it's back to the grind. Unfortunately, Kory has come down with the flu (high temp, body aches, etc.) so he will be joining me at home again today. The influenza is spreading like wildfire in the boys' school and the students are dropping out like flies each week. Last week one classroom had 9 gone in one day! I am praying that this passes through his system quickly.

On Sunday our church had a "family fun day" snow tubing at Sylvan Hills. There are six runs, three of which, were curvy and extremely fast. They had to close one while we were there due to dangerous conditions. I went down those twice and opted for the other three, which were fast, but straight. The boys loved it (Jason included). Jason, however, loved it a little too much as you can see below...

On the last run down the hill, he and our friend, Steve, decided they were going to take out some of the hay bails along the side. Well, their plan didn't quite pan out. They ended up headed straight at them. Steve plowed into the hay bails first taking out 10 and blowing 2 completely apart. And by doing this set himself up to be a perfect launching pad for Jason who was following right behind. Jason went up and his eye met the icing hill upon landing. He is feeling alright, but completely annoyed by having to explain what happened many, many times yesterday. I guess boys will never truly grow up will they?

Last week during the freeze out, Jason took some photos of one of the conveyors at work. Can't you just feel the cold air coming off your computer screen?!

Yikes! I guess this is what makes us northerners "hearty". In other words, this is what makes up pack on the extra pounds in winter :).

This week we are trying to enjoy a few quiet moments between meetings and such. And hopefully everyone will be healthy by Friday so we can make a trip to Grandma's and Grandpa's house.

Freezing in Wisconsin!

As I write this post it is -8 degrees with a windchill of -32 degrees, which makes the real feel a blustery -40 degrees. Can anyone stop this insanity?! And, it is only going to get worse tomorrow. Oh, how I hate winter...did the ground hog see his shadow? I believe he did not. Which supposedly means 6 more weeks of winter. Oh, if only that were true!

Jason is at the "No Regrets" men's conference in Milwaukee today. He was out of the house bright and early...3:30 a.m. I spent the morning into early afternoon taking care of two of my friend's little girls. It's nice to have girls around and they love the boys. Kory is spending the afternoon at his friend, Alex's birthday party. Kyle and I braved the cold (and Wal-Mart on a Saturday) and went and got the much needed groceries. And in about 15 minutes we are off to hang out with our friends the Yachs, eat pizza and watch "Take the Lead" while we are waiting for our husbands to return home. I am looking forward to the visit, just not having to go out in the frigid weather :(

This past week was filled with craziness. Jason and I went downhill skiing for the first time on Tuesday evening (with the temperatures in the single digits). I was extremely nervous anticipating this event; however, I found that it's not as hard as it looks. I caught on very fast and by the end of the 3 hours I was parallel skiing! Jason did quite well also; however, needs a little more practice before conquering the big hill :) I did not come out of the evening unscathed however. I did take a couple of nasty falls and I have huge bruises to prove it. Let's just say sleeping on my side was not an option for a couple of nights! I also managed to bruise my hands somehow while flipping and sliding down the slope...so on Wednesday I walked around with my hands raised in the air because hanging them at my sides caused severe throbbing and pain.

I spent my days this week at my friend Jessica's house assembling diaper cakes. We are hosting a baby shower for our friend, Ali (the pregnant one in the pictures below). Anyway, I have to say we did a splendid job, but I really don't want to look at anymore diapers, onesies, washclothes, and burp clothes for awhile. Once the cakes were finished we were onto the invitations. Who knew this many hours went into a baby shower?

My friend Emily is now back from vacation with her pictures. So I thought I would send you proof of the real craziness.

This week is filled with more business and hopefully warmer weather. We are going to friends' house for the super bowl...go Colts! Monday brings with it a consultation with Kyle's dentist. He needs quite a bit of work done on his teeth so we get to go and listen to the dentist explain what the head gear with do and how much money we will owe him:) Tuesday, Cub Scouts for the boys and I will be going to Hope Pregnancy Center for a tour with our youth group; Wednesday, One Way/G180; and then Jason leaves for Madison and will be back on Friday evening. Friday evening Jason's aunt, uncle and cousin are coming into town to go skiing (hence the mini skiing lessons on Tuesday) and Saturday will be spent on the slopes. Wow, with all this running, I hope to burn some major calories!

A Gathering of Friends at a Fondue Party

I wish I had all the photos of the fondue party because some of my friend's pictures were quite hilarious. I didn't have a chance to get them from her before she left for vacation...aw shucks! Anyway, after we all were stuffed beyond capacity, we played a game of Catch Phrase. Then myself and two of the guys (Steve and Bryan) decided standing on our heads would be a fun thing to do. Okay, not so much! Although I was impressed that I could still do it, at 31 and many pounds heavier, one's head can't withstand the pressure for very long. Needless to say, I had a headache and my neck and back haven't been the same since. We also thought it was a good idea to do cartwheels...I think I pulled a hamstring :) Can you believe that all this was done without any alcohol in our systems? Oh, to explain the "Ouch, too much pineapple" picture. Felicity ate too much pineapple which caused her lips to swell and have the "chapped" feeling. The carrots were cooling them off. We all had a good time and are looking forward to the next party whenever and wherever it will be!

Kory's cold did not escape the family...Jason and Kyle came down with it; however, not as badly as Kory. I have yet to get it and I am crossing my fingers that it doesn't catch up with me! Kory has his first official school program on Thursday evening. I have no idea what they are singing, I just know that he is part of the drama section (how fitting), playing a gingerbread man. He is very excited. It should be pretty good, he has some characters in his class!

I have to apologize that my posts aren't very interesting or newsworthy...it's just that the winter months in Wisconsin get quite long and nobody really comes out of their houses, unless it's a necessity. And, if our family isn't out doing something, we are pretty much doing very mundane things within the confines of this house. I am hoping that as spring and summer approaches that more excitement will fill our lives and I will have more to report. However, for now, you'll have to endure the mundane and wait with anticipation for the excitement :)

Anyway, as Patsy Clairmont puts it in her book entitled, "The Shoe Box", "A flip-flop is like a slipper with it's top down. Their casual approach suggests ease and relaxation. The kicked-back pace of a flip-flop day or week allows us to contemplate our blessings." So, here's wishing you a flip-flop week!

A Night Out....At the Symphony

Jason and I broadened our horizons this past weekend by attending the Hamburg Symphony at the Grand Theater. A friend of ours had two extra tickets and invited us to join her. It was a wonderful evening out. A long overdue evening out! The music was beautiful and it was amazing to watch them master their instruments. However, by the third composer and 2nd movement of the piece, we were ready for it to be over. I don't know if they were playing to our unsophisication , but they ended with what we know as "Beef, it's what's for dinner". We laughed at the fact that that was the only piece we recognized. Anyway, I'm good for another year or two :) At least I was able to get dressed up and act sophisicated for an evening.

Kory came down with a bad cold so he has missed two days of school. I am hoping he gets over it quickly and none of the rest of us come down with it.

This weekend we are going to a fondue party at our friends' house. I hear the chocolate & strawberries calling my name...yum! Oh yeah, the steak and chicken should be good too.

Anyway, there isn't too much to report this week. We are all doing well (except for the cold) and looking forward to enjoying a very unscheduled, relaxing week. Take care and God bless.

Whew...what a Christmas!

CHRISTMAS #1

This Christmas we made the 3 hour trip to to my mom's house in Balsam Lake, WI. We left on Friday, December 22nd, right before the big storm hit Wausau. We missed the ice, 8 inches of snow and a 20-hour power outage!



Keeping up with tradition, the boys and Grandma baked sugar cookies (mom doesn't have the patience!). Grandma had already had so many goodies at her place that looking at another cookie was just too much. I think most of the sugar cookies were tossed. Mostly because no one could stand to eat them after the boys finished decorating them -- two inches of frosting and another 1/8 inch of sprinkles. We also baked a cake in honor of Jesus' birthday, which we did eat.

The boys endured the time-honored tradition of having to wait to open gifts until after the evening Christmas Eve service and supper. At least this year's meal was a quick and easy clean-up...Turkey and Wild Rice Soup...yum, yum! It was a request from Grandpa. I'm really not sure why this tradition has stuck. I remember being a kid and having to wait the whole day before being able to rip off the wrapping paper to see what was inside. If I have to admit it, I really don't enjoy it as an adult!


Kyle was in charge of the camera for part of the gift opening. He did fairly well, only a few pictures that needed deleting. He said we needed a good picture of Jason and I so I think that this one will do :)

The boys were very excited when ripping off the wrapping paper revealed a PS2. Here they ALL are testing out the car racing game. Kyle and Jason didn't do so well using the steering wheel and foot pedals so Kory opted to not even try. Look at them, could we be any more zoned out?!

CHRISTMAS #2

On Christmas Day we went to my dad's house in Osceola, WI (20 minutes from mom's) and celebrated our second Christmas. It was a very relaxing day and there wasn't any waiting this time. We snacked vegetables (a welcomed addition to our diet), opened gifts, watched the movie "Cars" ( for about the 10th time). The boys got a tractor ride on Grandpa's tractor, played on the hay bails in the barn, and pet and fed the horses. They are anxiously awaiting summer when they can ride them. Later in the afternoon, we went to my aunt and uncle's house for ham, augratin potatoes, salads and too many scrumtious desserts to choose from.

After devoiding ourselves of all sanity for 10 minutes, we came back to reality which revealed two new monster trucks, a game of Perfection and roller blades. I now have monster trucks zooming across my kitchen floor and Kyle has even given his roller blades a whirl.

We came home on Wednesday, the 27th. Jason went back to work Thursday and Friday. The boys and I just relaxed and enjoyed not having an alarm clock to awaken us! We spent time with friends on Friday and Saturday evening and rang in New Year's by ourselves (barely made it until midnight)...watching the ball drop in Times Square. Jason spent New Year's Day watching football and bow hunting, I cleaned out closets, and the boys played playstation and enjoyed some time outside . I think all levels or episodes of the Legos Star Wars game have been conquered.

Nothing like an alarm clock to snap you back to reality...vacation is over and school is back in session. Today was brutal; however, I am hoping for sunshine and flowers tomorrow :)
